Rural Road Safety Month 2024
September 2024 marks the seventh anniversary of the Australian Road Safety Foundation’s (ARSF) annual Rural Road Safety Month, an important campaign focused on improving safety on regional and rural roads. This year’s theme, “Help Sow the Seeds of Change: Road Safety Starts with You,” emphasises the crucial role every road user plays in making responsible and safe decisions behind the wheel.
Despite fewer than a third of Australia’s population residing outside major cities, deaths on rural roads accounted for almost two-thirds of the 2023 fatality rate. In states such as Queensland, more than half of lives lost in speed-related incidents occur in regional and remote areas. For this reason, it is important to find effective solutions to reduce fatalities in rural and regional areas.
Acusensus is proud to be working with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) on a regional and rural Speed program, utilising Acusensus’ Harmony TS1 solutions. Since the program began in July 2023, the number of drivers caught speeding by the Harmony TS1 solutions has declined by 92% over the program’s first seven months. Furthermore, speeding fatalities have declined in the state from 88 speed-related deaths in 2022 to 59 in 2023.
Acusensus looks forward to continuing to plant the seeds for a safer future, inspired by this year’s Rural Road Safety Month message. We remain dedicated to advocating for safer road practices and eliminating dangerous driving behaviours, helping to cultivate a safer environment for all road users.
