NSW Strengthens Road Safety Efforts with New Seatbelt Detection

August 8, 2024

On July 1, 2024, the Acusensus Heads-Up solution, utilised in the Mobile Phone Detection Program in New South Wales, was expanded to include seatbelt detection.

In three weeks, 11,400 detections were recorded, with 75 per cent of these for improper seatbelt use.

New South Wales Road Minister John Graham emphasised the need for a “culture change” regarding seatbelt use, similar to the successful efforts against illegal mobile phone use in the state. The NSW Mobile Phone Detection Camera Program, utilising Acusensus’ Heads-Up solution, began in 2019 and has seen a decrease in mobile phone use while driving.

This advancement marks a major step forward in addressing multiple road safety challenges in New South Wales, with the number of seatbelt offences detected in the three weeks since July 1 surpassing the total seatbelt penalties issued by the NSW Police in 2023.

By combining seatbelt detection with mobile phone detection, Transport for NSW and Acusensus are addressing two major road safety issues simultaneously, leading to safer roads for everyone in New South Wales.

Acusensus is proud to support Transport for NSW in their mission to achieve significant improvements in road safety.
